Scalable PCM storage for renewable energy systems Compact Cell

Carsten Wemhoener

Head of IET Building System Technology Department and Professor

Modular in use and with a small footprint, the scalable storage Compact Cell based on Phase Change Materials (PCM) offers maximum comfort in combination with heat pumps.
Heat pumps are gaining ground worldwide. Our heat storages are designed to increase comfort in heat pump systems, reduce running times and facilitate implementation, in particular in retrofit application where space may be limited.
Heat pumps extract energy from the environment and generate sustainable heat for heating and hot water. Electrically driven heat pumps generate 100% usable heat from around 20% electricity, thus conserving environmental resources. If the electricity is obtained from renewable sources, the environmental impact is further reduced.
Heat pumps are versatile and are available in different configurations. By using sufficiently dimensioned heat storages, the heat pump can be operated gently and with maximum comfort.
Cowa thermal storages are the ideal complement to heat pump systems of all kinds. The heat storage absorbs the heat from heat pumps and releases it back into the building as required. This reduces running times and protects the heat pump components.
The compact cell can be used as buffer storages, domestic hot water storages or combined storages. In any installation, the technology offers a compact, hygienic and modular and scalable solution for sustainable heating systems.
The Compact Cell features encompass

- Compactness - Maximum comfort on a 60 x 34 cm footprint
- Cubic design – The continuous, cubic housing for every corner
- Hygiene – Minimum amount of standing water for highest hygienic requirements
- High storage capacity – 400 l hot water production on demand
- Simplicity – Sustainable heating systems in the smallest of spaces save costs and protect the climate
